A SOCKET FOR A PIPE JOINT

A socket (1) for a pipe joint is disclosed. The socket (1) comprises a housing (2), a resilient, annular gasket (6) arranged in an interior part of the housing (2), and an annular gasket support (9). The housing (2) has an opening (3) formed therein, the opening (3) being adapted to receive an end of a pipe to be joined to the socket (1). The resilient, annular gasket (6) is attached to an inner wall of the housing (2) in a substantially fluid tight manner. The gasket (6) defines an inner rim (8) adapted to abut an outer wall of a pipe being inserted through the opening (3) of the housing (2). The annular gasket support (9) is arranged in an interior part of the housing (2) in such a manner that it is adapted to support the gasket (6), at least when the pipe joint is subjected to an internal pressure. The gasket support (9) comprises at least two support members (10), each being mounted in a pivotally movable manner in the interior part of the housing (2). The annular gasket (6) and the gasket support (9) in combination ensure a very tight fit between the gasket (6) and a pipe inserted in the socket (1), especially when the pipe joint is subjected to internal pressure. The socket (1) is preferably configured in such a manner that attempts to remove a pipe from the socket (1) results in an even tighter fit. The socket (1) may comprise one or more retaining members (11) arranged in an interior part of the housing (2). Each retaining member (11) is adapted to perform rotating movements about a rotation axis (15) which is arranged tangentially with respect to a longitudinal axis defined by the housing (2). The retaining members (11) prevent the pipe from being moved out of the socket (1).
