The unit has a belt strap (12) and a corresponding retractor module (14) with a shaft pivot-mounted on an axle on which the belt strap is rolled. Operating force (F) is limited in the belt strap by a torsion rod unit (20) during vehicle crash. The torsion rod unit includes two torsion rods that are arranged coaxial to the axle of the shaft. The torsion rods are coupled with the shaft of the retractor module by a drive unit (22). A controllable coupling device (24) couples the torsion rods with the shaft of the retractor module.
