1,254,596. Cyanine dyes. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 14 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 8205/69. Heading C4P. [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] A cyanine dye comprises two N-containing heterocyclic nuclei joined by a dimethine or trimethine linkage in which the first nucleus is a pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyrazine or a pyrrolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline nucleus joined at the 3-position to the linkage and the second nucleus is (a) a heterocyclic N-containing nucleus having 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring joined in the 2- or 4- position relative to the N atom when the linkage is a dimethine linkage or (b) a 2-arylindole, pyrrolo[2,3-6]pyrazine or pyrrolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline nucleus joined at the 3-position when the linkage is a trimethine linkage. The cyanine dye may have a dimethine linkage and the second nucleus may be a desensitizing nucleus. The dye preferably has the formula wherein L is a methine linkage, R 1 is alkyl, substituted alkyl; cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl or aryl, R 2 is alkyl or aryl, R 3 and R 4 are each H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, or, taken together, the atoms necessary to form a fused benzene ring which may bear substituents, R 5 is H or aryl, R 6 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl or a heterocyclic radical containing 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring, the hetero atom being N, O or S, Z represents the atoms necessary to complete a heterocyclic nucleus having 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring, D represents the atoms necessary to complete an indole, pyrrolo[2,3-b]- pyrazine or pyrrolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline nucleus, R 7 is aryl when D completes an indole nucleus or, otherwise, H or aryl, n is 0 or 1 and X is an acid anion. Z preferably represents the atoms necessary to complete a desensitizing nucleus which may be a nitrobenzothiazole, nitrobenzoxazole, nitrobenzoselenazole, nitroindole, imidazo[4,5-b]quinoxaline or 1,3,3-trialkyl-3H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine nucleus. Many examples of these dyes are given and they may be prepared in the normal manner by refluxing the reactants in acetic anhydride. |
