Novel 6# - halo - 7α,17α - dihydroxy - 16 - (C 1-6 alkylidene)-progesterones and their novel diacylates (in which the two acyl groups may be the same or different) are prepared by reaction of the corresponding 6α,7α; 16α,17α-bis-oxido- 16#-alkyl-progesterones with the appropriate hydrogen halide in an inert organic solvent with subsequent acylation of the diols in an acid medium when the diacylates are required; and these diacylates are converted into the corresponding 6 - halo - 16 - alkylidene - 17α- acyloxy - 6 - dehydroprogesterones by reaction with a strong acid in an inert anhydrous organic solvent. The diols may also be similarly converted to the corresponding 6-halo-16-alkylidene-17α-hydroxy-6-dehydroprogesterones but the yield in this instance is very poor. The starting materials are prepared by the method disclosed in Specification 1,229,396. |
