<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact low cost infrared radiation element having a proper wavelength distribution without using a filter or the like, and a gas sensor capable of simultaneously detecting a plurality of kinds of gases using it. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the infrared radiation clement constituted so as to emit infrared rays from a heating element by passing a current through the heating element to generate heat from the heating element, a porous heat insulating layer 3 lower than a support substrate 1 in heat conductivity is formed to one side of the support substrate 1 and a lamellar heating element respectively larger than the heat insulating layer 3 in heat conductivity and electroconductivity is formed on the surface side of the heat insulating layer 3.
