Quarter inch wide strips of material 24, 33 are held at right angles to one another in notches 23 across pairs of clamping levers 19 pivoted at 18 to upper and lower mounting heads 15. The upper head 15 may be loaded by a 11b weight 36 which rests on a switch 37 in a timer circuit and the lower head may be raised by a handle 29 to lift a coupling 28 and the head supporting bar 13 so that the lower strip 24 engages and lifts the upper strip 33 along with the upper clamps, sleeve 35 and weight 36. As the weight is lifted off the switch 37 a timer operates a motor which rotates shaft 27 and steadily lowers the bottom clamps so that after a period of compressing the strips together the weight 36 is rested on a bracket 30 and the bottom strip is pulled off the upper strip. Before strip separation occurs and after resting the weight 36 the force of adhesion is indicated through a lost motion linkage 41, 42 directly pulling down on a spring balance 40. One of the strips may be of stainless steel so that a comparison between adhesion factors may be obtained for different rubber and so on strips when tested each against the steel strip. The instrument may be enclosed in a temperature controlled gas tight cabinet. |
