1,171,263. Steam conditioning polyamide filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 6 June, 1968, No. 27033/68. Heading B5B. Polyamide monofilament having a diameter of from 3 to 75 mils is continuously treated by passing it through a pressure chamber in the presence of saturated steam containing at least 2% by weight of entrained water and pulling it from the chamber at a ratio of output to input linear speeds of from 0À85 to 1À15, the filament being in the chamber for a contact time of from 10 milliseconds to 5 seconds and the saturated steam being at a pressure of from 12 to 90 p.s.i.g. within the chamber, which corresponds to a temperature less than the melting-point of the polyamide filament under the process conditions. The polyamides which can be treated preferably have a relative viscosity between 25 and 100 and may be e.g. polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, copolymers of polycaprolactam and polyhexamethylene adipamide, and copolymers of polyhexamethylene adipamide and polyhexamethylene sebacamide wherein the weight percentage of the latter monomer in the copolymer is up to 20% or over 80%. |
