Saturated secondary alcohols are prepared by passing a gas containing 5-60 vol. per cent of oxygen through a saturated hydrocarbon which is liquid under the reaction conditions, at from 180‹ to 220‹ C. in the presence as a catalyst of from 18 to 80 mole per cent (based on the total catalyst/hydrocarbon mixture) of an oxide or oxyacid of boron, and hydrolysing the intermediate borate ester formed. An nparaffin or cycloparaffin with 6 to 25 carbon atoms may be treated and ortho- or metaboric acids or boric oxide used as catalysts. In examples n-octadecane and n-dodecane are used to form the corresponding alcohols.
