The bank card used to make the payment is pre-programmed so that it can only be used to pay for a certain type of fuel, i.e. for petrol or diesel. This pre-programming is done via the existing magnetic strip or chip, or via an additional magnetic strip or chip applied to the card. The fuel pump can only be activated when the fuel selected by the user corresponds to that programmed onto the card.
