A tailstock in a machine tool having a bed comprises a tailstock slide 11 and a clamping element 2 by which the tailstock is clampable in a predetermined position on the bed 12, the clamping element being pressed to the bed by a rocking member 1 and the tailstock slide being formed with an abutment portion 5 which engages the clamping element to facilitate the transmission, of forces produced during the machining of a workpiece to the clamping element. A spring 6 is provided to urge the clamping member 2 into engagement with the abutment portion. The rocking member 1 is in the form of a two armed lever having centrally disposed spherical extension which bears against the clamping plate 2 when the clamping bolts 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> are tightened. Alternatively the rocking member may be in the form of a triangular plate pivotable on a ball shaped member or upward extension and secured by three bolts, the spherical member being at the centre of gravity of a triangle, the apexes of which are defined by the centres of the clamping bolts. |
