A method and system for determining the location of objects within a geographic area is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a plurality of portable transceiver devices each coupled to a respective object located within the geographic area; a plurality of stationary transceiver devices fixed at predetermined locations and established orientations within the geographic area, wherein the plurality of stationary transceiver devices are each configured with a phased array multi-element directionally sensitive antenna and control system to selectively receive and measure the signal strength radio signals transmitted by a portable transceiver device; and a base station device coupled to each of the stationary transceiver devices, wherein the base station device is configured to receive measured radio signal strength values associated with each directional antenna element from a plurality of stationary transceiver devices to determine the bearing from a stationary transceiver device to a portable transceiver device and thereby calculate by triangulation a location of at least one portable transceiver device.
