PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide projection variable focus lenses and a projection display for making miniaturization, lightweight, and inexpesiveness while being telecentric in a contraction side and in configuration capable of high variable power, and correcting various aberrations with sufficient balance in variable power. SOLUTION: The projection variable focus lenses moving only one group in variable power includes a negative first lens group G<SB>1</SB>, a positive second lens group G<SB>2</SB>, and a positive third lens group G<SB>3</SB>in order from a widening side. When a focal distance is variable, only the second lens group G<SB>2</SB>is moved in an optical axis X direction. In focusing, it is composed to move the third lens group G<SB>3</SB>in the optical axis X direction, and further the contraction side is composed to be substantially telecentric.
