<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing device which has a function suitable for each user. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A control unit UN1 controls the image processing device having a scanner unit UN5 for reading an image of an original document. The control unit includes a scanner characteristic corrector 2a for converting the image data read out by the scanner unit UN5 into normalized image data, an extended interface ZZ on which a controller image processor 3 for performing a reducing operation over the image data converted by the scanner characteristic corrector 2a is removably mounted, and a simple reduction image generator 2c for performing a simpler reducing operation over the image data converted by the scanner characteristic corrector 2a than that by the controller image processor 3 only when the controller image processor 3 is not mounted.
