<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop engine rotations at a target stop position with high accuracy even when the engine rotational speed is low when an engine stop request (idling stop request) is given. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When an engine stop request is given, engine stop control is started after the engine rotational speed has once been increased in the case where the engine rotational speed is not more than a predetermined value Ne1 set in consideration of the engine rotational speed at the start of an engine stop control necessary to ensure the accuracy of the engine rotation stop position. Such a way allows for an engine stop control system in which an engine stop control is started after the engine rotational speed has once been increased when the engine rotational speed is too low when the engine stop request is given. Accordingly, the engine stop control period (engine rotational angle) can be ensured, whereby the engine rotation stop position can be controlled at the target stop position with high accuracy, even when the engine rotational speed is low when the engine stop request is given.
