1,178,909. Invalid beds. FERNO-WASHINGTON Inc. 28 Sept., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 44234/67. Heading A4J. An articulated frame, which can be converted, from the in-line position shown, to form a seat (Fig. 2, not shown), is carried on a vertically extensible underframe, having the angular disposition, of its pivotally interconnected X-form members, controlled by a screw-threaded shaft (72). The X-form members are pivoted, at one end of the underframe, on fixed members 25, 65 and, at the other end, on slides 67 and telescopically mounted frame 24, which are displaced longitudinally during adjustment. Followers 43 are captive in goose-neck cams (75, 76, 81, 82, Fig. 3, not shown), which, on turning the handle, are drawn along the shaft (72), moving the articulated frame between a lowermost position, in which it rests on uprights 60 and an elevated position, in which it is level with a bed or surgical table. The shaft (72) is wound through a known kind of ball-bearing nut (70, Fig. 4, not shown) to draw this towards its end bearing (71, Fig. 5, not shown). This bearing contains a flat coiled spring brake (98) to prevent the shaft (72) from being rotated by reaction, through the nut (70), to the weight of the occupant.
