<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrophilic membrane suited for a blotting method, particularly a Western blotting method. <P>SOLUTION: The surface of a hydrophobic porous substrate, preferably made of PVDF, is caused to contact with a monomer reacting solution and is covered with a hydrophilic coating by free-radical polymerization under UV-irradiation to render the substrate permanently hydrophilic. The resulting membrane is hydrophilic, exhibits low back ground fluorescence, has high protein binding, is excellent in retention of protein sample spot morphology and has an extended dynamic range (high signal-to-noise ratio, that is, enhanced sample detectability). The membrane, particularly in detection of low-concentration protein according to the Western blotting method, exhibits high detection ability as compared to a nitrocellulose Western blotting membrane, is directly water-wettable and can eliminate the need for an alcohol pre-wet step prior to use. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p> |
