<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a genetic sequence encoding flavonoid pathway metabolizing enzymes, more specifically flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase (hereinafter referred to as "F3'H") or derivatives thereof, and to provide methods of their use in the manipulation of pigmentation in plants and other organisms. <P>SOLUTION: Nucleotide sequences encoding F3'H or derivatives thereof are provided. A method for producing a transgenic plant modulating the hydroxylation of flavonoid compounds is also provided, comprising the following process: cells or a cell group of an appropriate plant is stably transformed with a nucleic acid molecule encoding F3'H or various derivatives thereof, and the transgenic plant is regenerated from the cells or the cell group.
