<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting a vehicle for surely tracking vehicles within a detection area. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method sets an initial detection area P at an entrance of a detection area S, sets a vehicle 1, existing in the detection area P from an n-th scanning result (n is 1 or a larger integer) of laser light L, to a vehicle 1x to be tracked, grasps an initial position of the vehicle 1x to be tracked, sets a tracing search area C from the initial position, and determines a vehicle 1c included within the search area C as the vehicle 1x to be tracked from the (n+1)th scanning result of the laser light L.
