<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect only smear component superimposed on an image signal, and remove only the detected smear component efficiently from the image signal. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A smear correction portion 4 uses an image signal and a reference signal supplied from an image sensor. Next, the image sensor has an incidence region where light incident from an optical source is photoelectric converted to generate the image signal and a shading region where the reference signal is generated from dark current produced in a state that light is shaded; the correction amount generation portion removes noise superimposed on the image signal by a predetermined filtering; then the correction amount generation portion subtracts the reference signal from the noise-removed image signal to detect the smear component superimposed on the image signal, and generates a correction signal for eliminating the smear component from the image signal; and a correction amount generation portion 21 is provided. The correction amount subtraction portion 22 outputs an appropriately processed image signal, according to determination as to whether the smear component is superimposed on the image signal.
