PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for processing lumber, a method capable of processing even if a piece of lumber taken from material wood has knots. SOLUTION: The method includes: a lumber forming process for taking a piece of lumber from material wood so that, with the piece of lumber arranged in a prescribed position between a pair of metallic dies, the piece of lumber has a fiber direction nearly orthogonal to a relative moving direction of the pair of metallic dies; a cutting process for cutting a part of knots when the piece of lumber taken by the lumber forming process has knots with a strand crossing the fiber direction; and a compression process in which the piece of lumber with a part of the knots cut off in the cutting process is arranged in a prescribed position between the pair of metallic dies in a water vapor atmosphere of a higher temperature/higher pressure than those of the atmospheric air and in which the arranged piece of lumber is clamped by the pair of metallic dies with a compression force applied thereto.
