<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus and a calculation method which can obtain a distance from an optical sensor mounted on a carriage to a sheet surface or a reflectance of the sheet, using the optical sensor where a pair of a light emitting element and a light receiving element is constructed in one body. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A recording paper sheet 50 is recorded with an image by a recording head 39 when passing on a platen 42. The optical sensor 70 moves between a first position and a second position as the carriage 38 moves in a height direction 121. The light emitting element 67 of the optical sensor 70 emits a light towards the recording paper sheet 50 on the platen 42. While the optical sensor 70 is placed at the first position, a first voltage signal is outputted from the light receiving element 68. While the optical sensor 70 is placed at the second position, a second voltage signal is outputted from the light receiving element 68.
