A depression or slot is pressed into a workpiece 19 by a punch 5 actuated by a regulated fluid pressure between the punch and workpiece. The latter is preferably a jet engine fuel spray nozzle, Fig. 4 (not shown), in the end face of which are pressed two or more fuel spray slots (17) of predetermined depth. Punch 5 is secured to a fixed press base 2 and its upper end 15 is guided in a sleeve 50 resting on a spring 55. Coining ribs (16), Fig. 3 (not shown), are provided at the upper end of the punch and are of greater axial length than the depth of the slots to be formed in the workpiece 19. The latter is located in an adapter 41 secured to the press platen 4 and the lower end 18 of the workpiece slides in the sleeve 50 so as to centre the workpiece relatively to the punch. The platen is moved by pressure fluid supplied to a doubleacting cylinder 35 through control valve 39 and pressure regulator 38 by a pump 37. The pressure applied determines the depth of penetration of the coining ribs into the workpiece which may be made of stainless steel or "Stellite" (Registered Trade Mark). |
