PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system having a high optical performance, optical equipment having this zoom lens system, and a variable magnification method using the zoom lens system. SOLUTION: This zoom lens system ZL mounted on an electronic still camera 1 or the like is constituted by a first lens group G1 having a negative refractive power, and a second lens group G2 having a positive refractive power sequentially from the object side. The first lens group G1 is constituted by one or two negative lens components and one or two positive lens components. The second lens group G2 has at least two cemented lenses and is constituted by a positive lens component.
