<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mercury-free high-pressure discharge lamp and a lighting system equipped with the same excellent in light control characteristics and light-emitting efficiency. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The high-pressure discharge lamp includes a translucent airtight ceramic vessel 1 equipped with an envelope part 1a with a discharge space 1c formed inside, a pair of electrodes 2 arranged inside both end parts of the same, and an ionized medium sealed inside a translucent airtight ceramic vessel mainly containing light-emitting metal halide as metal emitting light and start-up gas, of a structure intrinsically not containing mercury, of which, the metal halide mainly emitting light contains at least a kind of halide of a lanthanoid system rare-earth metal with a sealing ratio of 30% by mass and the start-up gas includes a pressure P (an atmospheric pressure) satisfying: 1≤P≤20.
