[Also in Division H2] In a method of making an insulator in which a rod of resin bonded glass or other high tensile inorganic film is covered, to prevent tracking, by a preformed sleeve of elastomeric polymeric insulating material, the internal surface of the sleeve is treated with an etchant, e.g. sodium - naphthalene - tetrahydro - furan, to render the surface capable of bonding to an epoxy-based adhesive resin which fills the annular space between the sleeve and the rod. The etchant is continuously mixed with nitrogen to improve its stability. The resin-filling is carried out by applying compressed air to the resin and creating a lower pressure in the annular space. The sleeve may be of P.T.F.E. or other fluoro-carbon polymer or copolymer and annular bodies preferably of the same material are secured at regular intervals to it to increase the length of the leakage path. |
