An adapter for a smartcard, such as a SIM, which fits over and optionally attaches to the smartcard-SIM, providing custom services, such as memory or cryptographic services to the host device. One side of the adapter has electrical contacts in the same position and configuration as the smartcard-SIM, thereby interfacing to the host device in the same manner as the smartcard-SIM. The other side of the adapter has electrical pins in the same position and configuration as the host device, thereby interfacing to the smartcard-SIM. The adapter can include logic and resources, such as memory or cryptographic capabilities. The adapter thickness is such that the adapter/smartcard-SIM combination fits into the smartcard reader of the host device, with the adapter between the host and the smartcard-SIM. In this manner, the adapter can provide enhanced custom services to the host in addition to all the services normally provided by the smartcard-SIM. |
