The ironing device has an automatic switching-on/switching-off system (20) with a contact sensor (24) arranged at a handle, where the sensor outputs a contact signal during contacting. The system has a switch (S), which is functionally coupled with the sensor for automatic, time-delayed switching-off of an electrical heating device (14), when the contact signal of the sensor is failed and for switching-on the heating device, when the sensor outputs the contact signal. The sensor has contact-sensitive individual elements (28) that are distributed on the handle.
