<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a horizontal multistage press apparatus capable of improving an yield of a plate material (laminated plywood) after heating/pressing adhesion by measuring the thickness of a workpiece as a whole at the time of pressing on the basis of an operating distance of an opening/closing cylinder. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Two pressing cylinders 150L, 150R are arranged with equal spaces L apart right and left with the opening/closing cylinder 180 (pressing center O) therebetween in a manner roughly equalizing a distance away from a transportation reference face B with the opening/closing cylinder 180. The opening/closing cylinder 180 is equipped with a linear encoder 181 for the opening/closing cylinder by which the decrement of the entire thickness of the workpiece W is detected as the movement of a ram when the workpiece W is heating/pressing-processed from a closed state to the heating/pressing completion state of pressing boards 140F, 140B by the pressing cylinders 150L, 150R. The pressing cylinders 150L, 150R are equipped with pressure sensors 151L, 151R for the pressing cylinders by which the pressure of the pressing boards 140F, 140B is detected as the internal pressure of the cylinders.
