<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination apparatus that can achieve improvement of color reproducibility and brightness while suppressing an increase in cost of an entire projection type video display apparatus, and the projection type video display apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The illumination device includes a liquid crystal panel, a liquid crystal panel, a liquid crystal panel, a polarization-state adjusting element, and a cross dichroic prism. Green component light includes central-wavelength component light, short-wavelength component light, and long-wavelength component light.
