Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Pins for use in a nipple junction between carbon electrodes are divided from an extruded strand of a carbonaceous cement which comprises a liquid which on heating forms a hardenable synthetic resin, pitch, a carbon filler and dextrin e.g. in respective weight proportions of 20 to 30%, 25 to 60%, 10 to 40% and 5 to 25%. The liquid may be a furfuryl alcohol-acrolein condensate prepared as described in Example 1 of Specification 876,087 and may have a viscosity of 50 to 500 cP at 20‹ C; the pitch may have a M.P. of 120‹ to 180‹ C; and the carbon filler may be coke dust of below 60 microns. The cement pin may be completely carbonized at about 500‹ C.</p> |
