Copolymers of alpha-olefines and unsaturated metallic compounds containing alkoxy or aryloxy groups. N1-. Prepared by copolymerizing the olefin with a compound of formula (CH2=CHZO)nMAm(I), where Z is a 2-15C divalent hydrocarbon residue, so that the vinyl group and the O atom are separated by is not 2C, A is halogen and/or a 1-8C monovalent hydrocarbon residue, M is a metal or group I, II, III or IV, n is an integer with a value from 1 to not more than the valency of M, m is the valency of M minus n. The olefins have the formula CH2=CH-R, where R is H, alkyl with is not >15C or phenyl. The copolymers contain (i) alpha-olefin units and (ii) units of formula:- where A' is H, a metal atom or an acyl groupf (ii) is present in an amount of 0.005-30 moles %, related to (i). When A' is H, this is the result of treating the initial copolymer with an alcohol and/or HCl; when A' is an acyl group, the initial copolymer has been treated with a carboxylic acid anhydride. The copolymers have an intrinsic viscosity of is not 0.1 at 135 degrees C. in decalin. They have good dye receptivity, can easily be printed with inks or dyes, have good adhesion, antistatic properties and moisture absorption, and can easily be coated and cleaned. They can be used as fibres, films, moulding compositions, adhesives, in laminates, and to replace rubber. They vary from practically crystalline products to amorphous, rubbery substances. |
