Applying sealing tape.-A length of fracturable pressure-sensitive adhesive tape 19 is fed across a path along which containers 20 are rolled so that the tape seals the lid 21 of the container in place. In the form illustrated the tape rests on a flexible surface conforming to the shape of the container lid and is guided by a member 55 which retracts as the container rolls over it. The containers are guided by rollers 52, 52<SP>1</SP> and driven by belts 53, 53<SP>1</SP>. Feeding and cutting the tape.-A backing tape 25 carrying the adhesive tape is drawn around a sharp edge 32, to detach the tape, by a driving roller 36 when this is engaged by backing rollers 40, 40<SP>1</SP> moved by a solenoid 42 controlled by a limit switch detecting the containers. The tape is cut by a fixed blade 58 co-operating with the container lid. When a reel of tape is exhausted a limit switch controlled by a feeler 76 places a fresh tape reel, with its associated feeding mechanism, in position by an axial movement. Two such pairs of tape-feed mechanisms are provided at a spacing such that they feed tape to diametrically opposite points on the container. Packages.-The container may have a screw lid with a diaphragm panel indicating whether the vacuum is full, and the lower ends of the sealing tapes may lie under a label on the container.
