1,257,829. Carbon black. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 28 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 21447/69. Heading C1A. In a process for the production of carbon black in which a hydrocarbon feedstock flowing through a cylindrical reaction zone is enveloped in a stream of hot combustion gases produced in a cylindrical combustion zone having a greater diameter than the reaction zone and positioned immediately upstream therefrom, the combustion gas is produced from the combustion of a fuel in the presence of a free-oxygen containing gas wherein the oxygen is in an amount of from 2À2-2À5 times the stoichiometric amount required for the complete combustion of the fuel and the fuel and/or free oxygen containing gas is preheated to a temperature of from 530- 1000‹ F. The hydrocarbon feedstock heated to 430‹ F. is introduced via burner 8 where it passes into combustion zone 5 and is enveloped in a hot gas comprising air (preheated to 530‹ F.) and fuel gas in a ratio of 22 to 1. The hot combustion gas is introduced tangentially to the flow of feedstock via conduit 9. Carbon black is produced in reactor 6 and passed through outlet 10. |
