<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate the same image as an ordinary color or monochromatic reading and to shorten a time required for the reading even when a colored document or a monochromatic document is determined in ACS reading. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reader includes a monochromatic image sensor and a color image sensor, a reading position of a document with the monochromatic image sensor or the color image sensor is moved relatively to the document by moving a carriage, the document is read by the color image sensor (S103) and it is discriminated whether the document is monochromatic or colored (S104). When the document is discriminated to be monochromatic, the document is read by the monochromatic image sensor in returning the carriage (S106) and when reading the document by an ACS, even if the document is monochromatic, the document can be read by reciprocating the carriage once.
