PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer in which a ribbon holding element constituted to be attachable and detachable is easily mounted to a printer body. SOLUTION: The thermal printer is equipped with the printer body, the ribbon holding element which holds a winding holder for winding an ink ribbon and is constituted to be attachable and detachable to the printer body, a driving shaft which rotates the winding holder, and a controlling part which rotates the driving shaft when detecting an approach of the ribbon holding element to an mounting position where the ribbon holding element is mounted.
