PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which includes a function for detecting the paper powder amount of a recording material to be passed and automatically cleaning a fixing unit, according to the detected paper powder amount. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a feeding means 10 for feeding the recording material P; a detection means 907 for detecting the recording material P fed by the feeding means 10 on a conveying path; and a feeding retry means for retrying feeding, when the time from when feeding is started by the feeding means 10 to when the recording material P is detected by the detection means 907 exceeds a predetermined time. The image forming apparatus further includes: a storage means for counting and storing the number of feeding retry times by the feeding retry means; and a control section 7 for calculating the amount of the paper powder adhering to the feeding means 10 from the number of feeding retry times stored in the storage means.
