PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling a media player are provided to display an icon for controlling an embedded media player on an idle screen of a display unit, thereby enabling a user to conveniently playing multimedia contents. CONSTITUTION: A display unit(370) displays one or more icons on a background screen. A command managing unit(340) extracts a user command corresponding to the selected icon. A communication unit transmits a work command of a media player to the media player. The background screen includes an initial screen displayed by the display unit.
