PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which restrains influence of the surface potential of the last color toner image in imaging processes for the second and succeeding colors and decreases surface staining. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image carrier 1, one or more electrifying means 2 electrifying the image carrier, a latent image forming means forming a latent image by exposing the image carrier, and a plurality of developing means 4 developing the latent image with toner of different colors, and successively forms the respective color toner images on the single image carrier by exposing the electrified image carrier, forming the latent image and developing the latent image by color. When forming the respective color toner images other than the final color toner image, the image forming apparatus forms the latent image by exposing a non-image part on the electrified image carrier, and develops the latent image with the toner having a polarity reverse to the electrification polarity of the image carrier by color. When forming the final color toner image, the image forming apparatus forms the latent image by exposing an image part on the image carrier electrified by the same polarity as the electrification polarity, and develops the latent image with the toner having the same polarity as the electrification polarity.
