ACTUATED MATERIAL REMOVAL TOOL

Material removal tool (10) with a translating bar (104) having an actuation surface (112) shaped as a cone or frustum, wherein an axial position of the cone or frustum along a length of the translating bar (104) corresponds to a position of a push rod (120) in operable contact with a first flexibly mounted cartridge (12) on which a cutting insert (16) is mounted is disclosed. The translating bar (104) is actuated between a first and second position to place different combinations of flexibly mounted cutting inserts (16) and fixedly mounted cutting inserts (14) in a radially outermost position. The material removal tool (10) optionally includes a support (430) for the translating bar (104) to reduce radial variation during machining operations. Various combinations of flexibly mounted cutting inserts (16) and fixedly mounted cutting inserts (14) are disclosed along with various methods for removing material using the disclosed material removal tool (10).
