<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To release operating oil intruded from a reserver to a cylinder tube and operating oil intruded in a gas chamber behind a free piston to the reserver in a hydraulic shock absorber. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this hydraulic shock absorber 10, when the free piston 60 is in a descending end to a normal elevating end side, the gas chamber 73 behind the free piston 60 is cutoff from a gas chamber 32 of the reserver 30, and when the free piston 60 exceeds the normal elevating end, a sub tank chamber 53 is communicated with the reserver 30 via the gas chamber 73 behind the free piston 60.
