A sealed channel is formed between mating faces 80, 62 of two thermoplastic members 30, 32, e.g. plates, which have a channel 60 at the surface 62 of the member 32, by providing a strip of the thermoplastic material on the surface 62 outboard of and completely surrounding the channel 60 and by sonically melting the strip to form a weld band between the faces 80, 62. Apparatus for welding the plates 30, 32 comprises a welding horn 14 supported by a platform construction 18 vertically movable by cylinders 16 on posts 20. The plates 30, 32 are placed on a platform 34 parallel to the large contact area surface 28 of the horn 14 and which comprises a raised die block 52 on a plate 50 carried by a plate 46 adjustably secured by three screws 44 to a plate 36. The plate 32 is formed with a pair of ridges 70, 72, Fig. 4, on each side 64 of each channel 60, the outer ridges 70 being higher than the inner ridges 72. During the welding operation, the surface 80 engages the crests 76 of the ridges 70 initially and, after the melting of the crests 74 by the sonic vibrations of the horn 14, the surface 80 engages the crests 78 of the ridges 72 which become melted. The melted thermoplastic material flows into the space between the ridges 70, 72 to effect the weld. The pairs of ridges may be extended around the ends of the channels 60 as at 94, Fig. 2. Fluid inlet and outlet tubes 102, 104 and hooks 106 may be provided in the plates 32, 30 and, during welding, are received in cavities 108, 110, 112, 114 in the horn 14 and the block 52.
