PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generating unit capable of quickly increasing ion concentration up to a specific concentration at a time of start up and maintaining the specific concentration for aiming at a longer life as well, and provide a lighting device. SOLUTION: In the ion generating unit so structured that driving of an ion generating element A31 and an ion generating element B32 is controlled by a controlling part 52, the controlling part 52 is so structured that it may drive the ion generating element A31 and the ion generating element B32 at a time of starting up and it may drive for a specific time T1, and ion concentration in a space can be quickly increased up to a specific concentration at the time of starting up. After the specific time T1 elapses, it is so structured that the ion generating element A31 and the ion generating element B32 are driven intermittently and gradually one after another, and therefore a longer life can be aimed at by maintaining the specific ion concentration and shortening driving time of the ion generating element A31 and the ion generating element B32 as well.
