<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep inspection waiting time within a production schedule cycle time by shortening the waiting time prior to the start of a function test on an electronic control device in an external inspection process. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In an inspection method for an onboard inspection device wherein the electronic control device mounted on a vehicle is inspected by using a self-diagnosis function provided for the control device, a compact inspection device 4 with inspection allowing conditions stored therein is connected to an onboard network in an inspection entry, the allowing conditions relating to a vehicle state allowing correct inspection results to be acquired in an inspection process using an external inspection device 13 provided outside the vehicle. When the allowing conditions can not be achieved by the time the vehicle has transferred to the inspection process using the inspection device 13 via an inspection process using the inspection device 4 connected to the onboard network, an action to be handled is communicated to an operator by the inspection device 4 in order to cause the allowing conditions to hold good.
