The device (1) has electrical energy stores i.e. batteries (6, 7) such as nickel cadmium batteries, switched into permanent operating conditions e.g. standstill operating condition and drive operation condition, by a switching arrangement (10). The energy stores are serially and parallely connected in the respective permanent operating conditions, where bypass flow tapping is taken place in one of the permanent operating conditions. The energy stores are charged by a 12-volt generator (2) based on the parallel connection of the energy stores. An independent claim is also included for a method for supplying a motor vehicle with electrical energy.
