PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antibacterial agent effective on Gram-positive bacteria, especially a natural matter-derived one which is safe even if added to food or the like, and to provide an antibacterial method using the same. SOLUTION: The antibacterial agent comprises a beta acid-containing hop extract and a labiate extract, and, preferably, a non-liposoluble labiate extract. This antibacterial agent, which is suppressed in odor, exhibits high antibacterial activity on Gram-positive bacteria including those belonging to the genuses Staphylococcus, Lactobacillus, Listeria, Alicyclobacillus and Bacillus.
