PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for observing a water column performing observation in real time without requiring a number of acoustic imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The device for observing the water column includes a water buoy 2, a winding machine 3 mounted on the water buoy 2, a suspension cord 4 suspended from the winding machine 3, the acoustic imaging apparatus 5 that is attached to the suspension cord 4 and images acoustic video of the surroundings, a lifting controller 6 for lifting and moving the acoustic imaging apparatus 5 in a desired water depth segment by controlling the winding machine 3, a transmission cable 7 for transmitting acoustic imaging electronic information from the acoustic imaging apparatus 5 to the water buoy 2, and a radio transmission device 8 that is mounted to the water buoy 2 and radio-transmits the acoustic imaging electronic information.
