<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a paper conveyance control method for the image forming apparatus can prevent a paper jam occurring when a size predetermined by external input is different from the size of paper actually held in a paper tray. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a conveying means for conveying a recording medium in a carrier path including a recording region by a recording head, and a conveyance control means capable of controlling the conveyance start of a succeeding recording medium while a preceding recording medium existing on the carrier path when continuously conveying a plurality of recording media to form images. An image recording device includes a detecting means for detecting the width of the preceding recording medium, and a guessing means for guessing the length of the preceding recording medium from the detected width. In a recording medium conveyance control method for the image recording device, the conveyance control means controls the conveyance start of the succeeding recording medium based on the guessed length of the preceding recording medium.
