A polymeric material containing hydroxyl groups is impregnated with a solution of an initiator (I) then treated in the most or swollen state with the vapour of a grafting monomer (II). (I) is a substance which yields ceric ions. (II) is a vinyl or acrylic monomer. Grafting may be effected at ambient temperature or below.
