PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carriage which operates normally for a long period based on positional information read with an encoder sensor reading a slit of a linear scale always accurately. SOLUTION: The carriage 2 of a liquid droplet discharging unit 15 which carries the encoder sensor 5 for reading the slit on the linear scale 4 includes a dirt detecting unit for detecting the dirt on the linear scale 4 based on the information from the encoder sensor 5, an encoder sensor moving unit for moving the slit reading position of the encoder sensor 5 in the width direction of the linear scale 4, and an encoder sensor moving controller for controlling the moving operation of the slit reading position with the encoder sensor moving unit based on the dirt information from the dirt detecting unit.
