PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent degradation in focus detection performance in a periphery of an imaging area in its long-side direction. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus is configured such that a plurality of pixels are arranged within a rectangular imaging area 100, the plurality of pixels arranged in the short side direction 111 of the imaging area 100 are simultaneously subjected to charge accumulation control and the plurality of pixels arranged in the long side direction 110 of the imaging area 100 are sequentially subjected to the charge accumulation control. In the peripheral portion of the imaging area 100 in the long side direction 110, a plurality of focus detection pixels for detecting the focus adjustment state of an optical system that forms an image in the imaging area 100 are arranged along the short side direction 111 of the imaging area 100.
